Why a Maasai Mara Safari?

Taking a Maasai Mara Safari is just an unforgettable experience especially when one does it during The Great Migration. You will experience one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World where more than 1.5 million Wildebeests and Zebras migrate between Kenya (Maasai Mara) and Tanzania (Serengeti) which occurs between July and October every year. However, you don’t have to visit the Masai Mara during the peak season to enjoy, you will get a chance to witness some herds of wildebeests and the African Big 5 (Elephants, Lions, Buffaloes, Leopard, and Rhinos) plus many other animal species during any season.

Below are some of the Masai Mara safari packages we have at very good price. You can click on More Information to see the full itinerary, price inclusive, highlights and other details or book the safari.

Maaai Mara Road Safari vs Fly-in Safari

To get to Maasai Mara from the major cities in Kenya like Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu or any other one can do it by either road or flight.  A Maasai Mara Safari from Nairobi by road will take you about 7 hours to get the conservancy while a Fly-in from Nairobi usually takes about 1 hour.

Masai Mara Road Safaris

The advantage of the road safari is that you get to see several attractions including the Great Rift Valley, Mount Longonot, and the smallest church (Italian Church) among others. The disadvantage of this is that it is a long road trip which means that on the first day you will have less time to enjoy in the park yet the park fees are paid per day.

The other advantage of the road safari is that the Maasai Safari by road is usually more affordable than flight.

The disadvantage of a Maasai Mara safari is that it can be tiring for seniors and people who are not used to taking roadtrips more than 7 hours. However, our 4×4 tour vehicles are very comfortable and most people fair very well on this safari.

Here are some of the Maasai Mara road safaris we offer here at Kifaru Discover Safaris. Our rates are very affordable and we have cheap Masai Mara safari packages too. You can send us an inquiry below for a custom Maasai Mara safari for the best rates.

Masai Mara Flight Safaris

The main advantage of the Maasai Mara Fly-In Safari is that it takes about 1 hour to get to Masai Mara. This is can go as high as 3 hours considering the airport check-in and transfers. This still gives one more time to enjoy their game drive in the Maasai Mara on the first day.

A Fly-in Masai Mara Safari is recommended for people who want to arrive to Maasai Mara in the shortest time and also seniors who can’t cope with the long road safari.

A flying safari is among the best Masai Mara packages from Nairobi because it takes less time to reach Maasai Mara and more comfortable.

With a fly-in safari one can do a 2 days Maasai Mara but it is recommended to do at least a 3 days Safari so that one can have at least one full day in the conservancy from early morning game drive to late evening game drive when animals are most active. It is however good to note that the Maasai Mara Conservancy opens at 6 a.m and closes by 6 p.m.

One shortcoming of Masai Mara Fly-in Safari is that it is more expensive than a road safari due to the local flight charges. It is also good to note that there are no international airports in Maasai Mara and tourists have to connect with local domestic flights from Nairobi which land on small airstrips in Maasai Mara.

Some of the Airstrips in Maasai Mara include Keekorok Airstrip, Serena Airstrip, Musiara Aistrip, Kichwa Tembo, Ol Kiombo Airstrip among others. The domestic flights have a bag weight limit of  15kg per passenger for both check-in and carry-on which limits the amount of luggage you can carry. Only Duffel type bags are allowed on the Mara flights.

Below are some of the best Masai Mara Fly-In Safari Packages which also come with accommodation in some of the top Masai Mara hotels such The Spirit of the Maasai Mara, Mara Maisha Camp, Governors Camp, Enkorok Hotel, among others. Best Time to Do a Masai Mara Safari

Maasai Mara is always interesting to visit any time of the year because you can always spot the Big 5 animals of Africa which include African Elephants, Lions, Buffaloes, and Rhinos. Other animals which are found easily include cheetahs, wildebeests, giraffes, ostriches, gazelles, and hundreds of bird species including the beautiful national bird of Kenya, the Lilac-Breasted Roller (you have to see this beauty!).

However, we can say that the very best time to visit Maasai Mara is between June and November during the Great Migration a time when about 1.5 million wildebeests and herds of zebras migrate from Serengeti (Tanzania) to Maasai Mara (Kenya).  In this period you will be to experience this amazing spectacle which is one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.

However it is good to keep in mind that the Masai Mara safaris usually cost more during the peak (during Great migration) and high seasons (holidays).

Anytime you visit Maasai you will indeed have a very memorable safari and  one of the best in Africa.
